Hey everyone,
I'm currently mapping out my trajectory for junior year and trying to get some perspective from people who have been through the ringer. Right now, my plan includes juggling multiple AP classes, dual-enrollment college courses, a summer surgical shadowing internship, starting a part-time job, and founding/running a mental health policy nonprofit.
On paper, I know this builds a really strong "spike" for Top 20 schools, but looking at it all together is a little daunting. For those of you who did the absolute maximum in high school: Was it actually worth it? Did you face major burnout, and how did you protect your mental health while keeping your GPA up?
Would love any honest advice, reality checks, or time-management tips from fellow overachievers!
It really depends on what AP classes you're taking, but all of this on top of the SAT and ACT is gonna be a lot. What worries me the most is the non-profit just because so much of it is going to be out of your control. It depends on where you live but near me there's already a lot of things like that, and getting something like that approved and running takes a lot of work and dependence on others to participate. If you're looking into surgery you might be tempted to take multiple science AP courses in the same year which I would not recommend based on everything else you have going on if you want to keep your GPA high. Try to start studying early in the year because you will forget stuff and realize you have a week to relearn before the AP test. For AP tests also try to learn how the test itself and the questions work, that can be just as important as learning the material. I would advise writing all of your assignments, study time, and other activities down somewhere, preferably a digital platform like Notion or even just Google Calendar or your notes app. A lot will be going on that's easy to forget, so make sure to keep up to date on your emails also. I think this plan could work well if you space it out and manage your time well, just remember that at the level of these top 20 schools, they're choosing from thousands of overachiever students who will have similar resumes to you and nothing is certain even for people with the most insane grades and extracurriculars. I believe in you though, good luck!
Personally, I'm doing the crazy spike the summer before senior year for the most flexibility. But the way I designed mine was in roughly 2 categories (building applications for others {programming} and an online business for myself {business}). I didn't want to be pulled a million different ways because then I wouldn't get anything done and would self-destruct (learned the hard way). So if you end up cutting down or trying to redecide, there's a system that might work for you.
First, I would pick either the APs or the College classes (if you do manage to pull this off, I commend you).
Next, pick between the job shadow or the part-time job (since the job shadow is for the summer and if the part-time job is gonna start in the school year, you might be able to keep both. Gauge yourself if that's the case.)
Finally, founding the mental healthy policy nonprofit. When are you going to start this? If it's during the summer, it might not be super hard. Especially if it's just alongside the job shadow or by itself. If it's during the school year, you are really gonna have to push yourself to balance school, other ECs (if you have them) and the nonprofit.
I would definitely cut some things out as personally, it would burn me out. But maybe you're a stronger soldier than I am.
Let me know if you have any questions and best of luck!
