Alternate for Iowa Young Writers' Studio admissions common app placement
Answered

Today, I received an email that I was one of ten applicants chosen as an alternate for the Iowa Young Writers' Studio TV writing class. There were nearly 1800 applicants, and 1600 got flatly rejected. It is unlikely that I will fully get in, but I feel like this is something I should put on my Common App. Is being an alternate for the IYWS something worth putting in the section that asks: Would you like to share any additional details or qualifications not reflected in the application?

It is something to consider because IYWS is prestigious. I was chosen for the online creative writing course this past year and am headed to Kenyon Young Writers this summer, so I have a little bit of experience on the topic. I included the mention of IYWS on my other applications, and I think the fact that I participated boosted that up. That being said, colleges care more about what you got out of the program than that you were chosen as an alternate. Regardless, even being an alternate indicates to colleges that you are a strong writer, which they want, so you can include it in additional information if you want. Do not, however, put this in your main activities list, and if you have something that you would rather put in the additional information, that would be better. Hope this helps!
